What is r.emynd.us?
r.emynd.us was developed by my friends and me as a Final Year Project over at CMRIT.It basically is a location aware reminder service developed for mobile phone’s. The service uses the cell tower information of the tower closest to the phone to approximate the location of the device. If a user has a task or a reminder associated within close proximity of the location it will send out an SMS with the task details to the user. The USP of the project is the reliance on Cell Tower info instead of data from a GPS chip-set which is not very common except on very high end devices (In which case the user most probably has a PA to do the needful :D).
One of the roadblocks we faced while developing the project was retrieving the information from the phone via J2ME.A large number of handsets don’t allow access to the information making the application non universal. My friend Vikram was able to develop the Windows Mobile app without any hiccups thanks to a universal API to access the required information.
Some of the other features include changing the ringer setting’s based on the phones location (No more worries about the phone ringing in the middle of the class) again this is only available in the Windows Mobile version due to lack of access to ringer settings on J2ME.We have also included location based search for businesses (In case of a car failure in the middle of nowhere we should be able to help).
The URL for the project is you guessed it r.emynd.us the Web Interface was developed by Manu using Adobe Flex. Sadly the service is currently not available to the public due to a variety of reason’s including out inability to find a cheap way of sending out messages.
Got any suggestions or comments send me an e-mail.
PS:-If you are wondering about the misspelling (r.emynd.us) the domain name we were looking for r.emind.us got booked just a day before we could pick it up the misspelling does give it a nice Web 2.0ish feel though
