I totally agree with Jeff Atwood on this,Web Programming just makes maintenance and prototyping of applications so much more simpler also the code is more reusable and without doubt more portable.If you consider the case of a standard application like say a Invertory Control System most of what can be acheived by a classical programming language can also be acheived using say a combination of javascript and html.Linux will definitely get a push when more applications just need a browser to run.Case in point G Mail its a classic example of a web app which invades the territory of a Standard App such as a Mail Client like Thunderbird or Outlook.Even stuff like music players are getting stiff competition from apps like Spotify.I am a big believer of the cloud life so I “may be” biased.
